At Hanson Dental, we understand that many people experience anxiety when they think about going to the dentist. In fact, studies show that as many as 48% of people have some level of dental fear or anxiety. Dental anxiety can stem from a variety of different factors, but the end result is the same: people are not getting the dental care they need.
In this blog post, we’ll share some tips on how to prevent dental anxiety so that you can get the dental care you need and deserve. Keep reading to learn more!
1. Talk to your dentist about your anxiety.
The first step in preventing dental anxiety is to talk to your dentist about your concerns. Your dentist will be able to work with you to come up with a treatment plan that helps you feel comfortable and relaxed during your appointment. For example, your dentist might suggest using nitrous oxide (laughing gas) during your procedure to help you feel more relaxed.
2. Distract yourself during the appointment.
If you’re someone who gets anxious when you think about what’s happening during your dental appointment, try distracting yourself by listening to music or watching a movie during your treatment (Some of our treatment rooms are equipped with TV screens in the ceiling!) Distracting yourself can help take your mind off of what’s happening and make the time go by more quickly.
3. Practice deep breathing exercises before your appointment.
Another way to combat dental anxiety is to practice some deep breathing exercises before your appointment. Taking some deep breaths can help slow down your heart rate and make you feel more relaxed overall.
We hope that these tips have been helpful in providing some ways that you can prevent or reduce dental anxiety!
