A white smile is something that everyone desires, which is why many people do their best to achieve this look. After all, your smile is the first thing people notice about you! Here are some suggestions on how you can achieve a look of beautiful, white teeth.

Brush your teeth twice a day.

It is important to brush your teeth so you can keep the white smile you have been working hard for. After eating, drink water before brushing. Brush at least two minutes with fluoride toothpaste and use a soft-bristled toothbrush. We can offer suggestions for a whitening toothpaste that can help to remove mild surface stains. Some people do experience sensitivities with these kinds of toothpastes, however. It’s important to find a toothpaste that is gentle and not too abrasive for your teeth, or you may experience a thinning of your enamel (which protects your teeth).

Avoid drinks that can discolor your teeth.

Certain drinks and foods will start to discolor your teeth. Think of it this way – if you are wearing a white blouse, and you spill your beverage on the fabric, would it stain? If so, that beverage would probably stain your teeth over time, too. If you want white teeth, then coffee, tea, cola or red wine should be avoided. However, if it’s simply too difficult to give up those beverages, there are a few things you can try.

  • Rinse your mouth with water after consuming these beverages
  • Try a sugar-free gum after drinking
  • Use a gentle whitening toothpaste (we can suggest the best options)

If you’re a smoker, it’s time to quit.

Smoking is one of the worst things you can do for your teeth. Not only does it stain your teeth, but it also contributes to gum disease and tooth decay.  The tobacco in cigarettes can discolor teeth, even eventually turning them brown. The good news? You can quit smoking today, and be on the tobacco-free path to health tomorrow.

See Us for a Professional Whitening Treatment.

Although you can whiten your teeth yourself at home, it is very difficult to remove all of the surface stains. And, unfortunately, some products that are available over the counter may cause harm to your teeth – especially if they are used excessively. Whitening products are formulated to work with white enamel, white fillings, and white crowns. With a professional treatment at our office, we can custom-design a treatment that works best for your teeth – which will help you achieve safely whitened teeth.

At Hanson Dental, we offer different options for tooth whitening and can help develop a plan with you, whether it is a one-day treatment or a custom-fitted tray-based treatment plan which spans over a series of days.

In addition to professional whitening treatments, we offer a variety of other cosmetic dentistry options which can help give you the smile you have always wanted.
