It’s important to take good care of your teeth and gums, and visiting the dentist regularly is a key part of maintaining dental health. However, there are also some signs that you may be neglecting your oral health. If any of the following five items below are familiar to you, it’s time to schedule a visit to the dentist:
1. You don’t floss regularly
Dentists recommend that you floss at least once a day. Flossing helps to remove plaque and bacteria from between your teeth and under your gumline, where brushing alone cannot reach. In addition, flossing helps to stimulate the gums and promote blood circulation. As a result, regular flossing can help to prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.
2. You only brush your teeth once a day
It’s no secret that brushing your teeth is important for maintaining good oral hygiene. But did you know that brushing just once a day isn’t enough? You should be brushing your teeth twice a day. That’s because the food and plaque that accumulate on your teeth can only be removed with a good brush (and some flossing too). So if you’re only brushing once a day, you’re missing out on an important opportunity to keep your teeth clean and healthy. So next time you reach for your toothbrush, make sure you do it at least twice, preferably morning and evening.
3. You avoid the dentist
According to the American Dental Association, you should visit the dentist at least twice a year for professional cleanings and exams. However, many people avoid going to the dentist altogether, either because they’re afraid of the dentist or because they don’t have dental insurance. Unfortunately, avoiding the dentist can lead to serious dental problems down the road. Cavities, for example, are caused by a build-up of plaque and bacteria on teeth. If left untreated, cavities can eventually lead to tooth loss.
In addition, gum disease is another common problem that can occur when plaque is not removed from teeth on a regular basis. Gum disease can cause inflammation and bleeding of the gums, and in severe cases, it can lead to bone loss. Therefore, it’s important to visit the dentist regularly in order to maintain good oral health.
4. Your teeth are sensitive to hot and cold temperatures
If you have sensitive teeth, you may feel discomfort when your teeth are exposed to extreme temperatures, such as hot or cold foods and drinks. You may also feel sensitivity when you brush your teeth. Sensitive teeth can be a sign of a number of dental problems, so it’s important to see a dentist if you’re experiencing this symptom. There are several treatments that can help to reduce tooth sensitivity, such as fluoride gels and toothpastes. In some cases, your dentist may also recommend a root canal procedure to relieve the pain. With proper treatment, you can enjoy relief from sensitive teeth and keep your smile healthy and beautiful.
5. Your gums are swollen or red
Swollen or red gums can be a sign of gum disease, which is caused by a buildup of plaque on the teeth. Early stages of gum disease can often be reversed with good oral hygiene, but more advanced stages may require treatment by a dentist.
Gum disease is classified into three stages: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and it is characterized by gums that are red and swollen. Periodontitis is the next stage of gum disease and it is characterized by gums that are receded or pulled away from the teeth. Advanced periodontitis is the most severe stage of gum disease and it is characterized by deep pockets around the teeth that contain pus and debris. Gum disease is a serious condition that can lead to tooth loss. If you think you may have gum disease, see your dentist for an evaluation.
